And people use to think that Alanis Morissette had relationship issues!!!
I came home to a FedEx package one evening a few nights ago. Not really expecting anything, I was anxious to see what it was so I brought it into my office and spilled out its contents onto my desk. It was a couple of CD’s and some press materials so I immediately figured, “Heck! If this management company spent all that extra money to send out a package FedEx, it must be pretty good!”
So I grabbed the first CD and as I flipped it over, the cover immediately jumped out at me… almost literally! Surrounded by flames, a very angry-looking blond woman looking very much like Pink on acid was staring me in the face. After the initial shock, I thought to myself, “Oh boy… here we go!” But giving it the benefit of the doubt, I popped it into my CD player to hear what BITCHFIRE was all about.
Surprisingly, I was pretty impressed at first. The opening track “Headlines” is a great, great tune! An edgy, hard-hitting rocker with a double-bass pounding rhythm and some nice guitar licks and solos. Lead vocalist Sharyn Peach has as pretty damned good voice reminding me a bit of a cross between Lita Ford and (now sit back in your chair for this obscure reference kiddies!) Lisa St. Ann during her time on the New Jersey club circuit with her band KIDD GLOVES. If you’ve never heard of Lisa St. Ann or KIDD GLOVES, I highly, HIGHLY recommend you check her out and see if you can pick up some of her stuff on Ebay, it’s WELL worth it for this incredible, unsung talent… but back to BITCHFIRE!
As I said, I rather enjoyed the first track… the first three as a matter of fact! The second song, “Fly High,” is another in-your-face, gritty rocker and “Pleasure Is Pain,” although a bit weaker than the first two, still delivers with its abrasive melody and heavy guitar work.
Right about now, the CD starts to take a bit of a turn for the worst.
The bands’ moniker track “Bitchfire” comes up next and starts a trend which basically carries through every song on the CD from here on out… that trend being an overall basic lyrical theme of: I got screwed over by my lover now I hope you die! (Hey, I’m doing my best here to be politically correct and NOT gender specific… however, I can’t imagine a woman ever being THIS FRIGGIN’ ANGRY at another woman so, it HAD to be a guy!)
That being said, LET THE MALE BASHING BEGIN !!!
For the rest of the CD, you’ll be thrilled to thought-provoking, heart-felt lyrics like:
“I don’t need your fucking shit you good-for nothing liar, You took a few hits, make you tough muther-fucker, But no more, You treat me like a fucking whore, Gonna fight back, Make it look like a heart attack ”
“Your love is like a disease, Like ashes in the breeze, You’re toxic waste to me, I wanna hear you scream”
OR
“I played the fool, Once or twice before, The sound of a gun shot and the, Slamming of a door”
Yes indeed, lyrics for the whole family to love! Someone hurt Ms. Peach… and hurt her REAL BAD!!!
But seriously, it wouldn’t be so bad but it just seems more and more as the CD continues that the songs get progressively repetitive and weak. While they all maintain that heavy, aggressive quality, the music itself just starts to droll on and on with very little substance or quality as that of the first couple of tracks.
All I can say is, the first two or three songs are definitely worth a listen but beyond that, unless you’re a jilted female looking for revenge, the rest of the CD just doesn’t cut it. BUT, I would recommend you get a copy of this over to the Lifetime network as I’m sure they’re always looking for some good “male-bashing” material to use as a soundtrack to go along with their “Men suck and should all die!” based movie themes.
