First let me start off by saying you got to give credit to EDENS CURSE for being a band that seems to get knocked back almost every time they try to make steps forward. With their very first US appearance (at Melodicrock Fest 2 in IL) they had some internal problems that could not be avoided and the band almost didn’t play. Now with the release of their new album “Trinity some ass-wipe posted the CD for illegal download to the torrent and blog sites. But with any luck, the personal strength within the band, especially singer Michael Eden, shall make them rise and bypass any setbacks as they try to be the new entity that rejuvenates the masses of the rock world.
Now getting back to Trinity, which I’ve been waiting to hear since RockEyez were lucky enough to witness them live at the Melodicrock Fest 2 show just about a year ago. EDENS CURSE for me were the best band on the bill that weekend and not only did Michael Eden impress me but guitarist Thorsten Koehne is a demigod on the axe; man, can he play some whoop-ass licks! And the rhythm section of Paul Logue on bass and Pete Newdeck on drums was as solid as they come.
The CD opens with a short intro titled “Trinitas Sanctus”, which sets the tone with some narration and spiritual sounds before it rips into the vibrant sound of “Trinity” with Eden showing his full range. I have to admit Eden’s vocals are unique and powerful; he kind of has the flare of Kevin Cronin mixed with a bit of Tony Harnell and DREAM THEATER’s James LaBrie. Vocally, Eden is stunning on this track and I love when guitarist Thorsten Koehne hooks up with the keys of Alessandro Del Vecchio; they set fire to the music. A killer opening song!
“Saints Of Tomorrow” reminds me of a classic rock track in a time when bands played as a singular, tight unit. The great harmony vocals (featuring DREAM THEATER’s James LaBrie) make this track a special one.
The first single/video from “Trinity” has ecstasy running through my body as Eden and LaBrie collaborate on “No Holy Man”. What a match made in heaven. The song has a DREAM THEATER vibe for sure but it is so much more and the chorus is pure gold. You’ve just got to hear this one…
With a calming feel the band hits you with a soft amazing ballad called “Guardian Angel”. When Michael Eden hits those high notes it just blows me away every time. Thorsten slips in some phenomenal soaring melodic licks on this one too and the song is a nice break from the hard-hitting trio of songs that opens the album.
Now let’s take it back up a level after crying my eyes out… “Can't Fool The Devil” hits and hits hard. Slashing, fast-paced guitar and double bass drums set the tone on this tune. Does Thorsten think he’s Yngwie here? he sure does kick ass on this one. And you can almost envision Eden’s message to those evil downloader’s at the end of the song too!
“Rivers Of Destiny” is a mid-paced song with some nice orchestration. The backing vocals of LaBrie are a nice touch too and the melodic solo ties it all together.
It was hard for me to pick a favorite but here we go… “Children Of The Tide” beginning reminds me a bit of GREAT WHITE’s “Save Your Love” with its moody acoustics, well, until they hit the chorus and explosions take hold of you. It really is an amazing track with a lot going on and the heavier section reminds me a bit QUEENSRYCHE.
EDENS CURSE pays homage to the late, great Ronnie James Dio with a rendition of “Rock N' Roll Children”. It’s a straight on version and handled well by Eden. Great job here guys!
As a bonus track, EDENS CURSE delight U.S fans with “Never The Sinner” and it’s another phenomenal track that could be a contender for one of the strongest on Trinity.
Thank you EDENS CURSE for the long-awaited CD, “Trinity”, now everyone go out and BUY it! You will not be disappointed.
