Sternly paganistic, in the bona fide manner of BURZUM. Like one man bedroom brooding novices bordering on genius yet hell bent on racial purity and existentialism. Enter- FIR BOLG another candidate in the far beyond sell by date of low budget epic Viking metal. Compositionally linear, revamping nearly every trademarked chord that Varg ever dreamed up FIR BOLG scours very familiar terrain.
This release is lent a subtle amount of credence due to its issue on Schwarzdorn Productions, a German label that lends its roster an aura of exoticism. Not shocking considering what mysteriously emanates from that part of Europe's mass countryside. Not all is lost though. There are some redeeming values present. Like "Invocate the Old Spirits of Woods" a song that causes one to imagine canvassing misty mountain cliffs wielding broadswords and outfitted in battle worn chainmail or the hum along fairy tale rhythms of "Celtic Death Pagan Ritual".
Yes, imitation is the highest form of flattery but one can rarely be flattered by imitation. This being a case in point .Criticism aside and as hypocritical as it may be I did quite enjoy it. But I never failed to trace its source of origin whilst doing so
