This one’s a “little” late as KANSAS’ “There’s Know Place Like Home” was actually released in late 2009, but since I just received the CD/ DVD a short time ago, I felt it was just too good to be overlooked.

In celebration of their 35th Anniversary, one of the forefathers of progressive rock and one of the most influential bands of the mid-to-late 70’s KANSAS got together in their hometown of Topeka for three nights in February to record what was to become the dual CD/ DVD release of “There’s Know Place Like Home.” But this wasn’t just your typical KANSAS show. Backed by the Washburn University Symphony Orchestra and conducted by none other than long time KANSAS friend and arranger Larry Baird, the band set out to create a quality compilation which would span the band’s entire 35 year history… and that’s exactly what they did.

The band, producers, and everyone involved with this project really went all out on this one to capture not only the magic of the performances themselves, but the essence of what KANSAS is really all about. Sure, they could have played their radio hits all night long but instead of just making this a “greatest hits” show, the band dug deep into their archives to unearth some rare treasures which blended so beautifully along with the radio-friendly hits we all know and love.

Tracks like “Belexes.” “Icarus II” and “Icarus: Borne On Wings Of Steel” really showcase just how far ahead of their time this band really was with their heavy, prog-like style and intense, stunning arrangements. And it isn’t just some of the song selections themselves that round out this exquisite collection but the addition of former band members like song-writer extraordinaire Kerry Livgren and guitar-master Steve Morse along with the symphony orchestra just tightens and launches these masterpieces to an entirely different level. This is more than apparent on tracks like “Musicatto” (a little lesser known diamond from KANSAS’ 1986 release “Power”) where Morse’s guitar prowess really shines, “Cheyenne Anthem” and a masterful rendition of the KANSAS hit “The Wall.”

The inclusion of “On The Other Side” from the band’s “Monolith” release was another nice addition to the set as well as the more somber and moody “Nobody’s Home” and “Ghosts” combined with “Rainmaker” where lead vocalist Steve Walsh gives one of his best vocals on the release. Then, of course, there’re the hits like the title track to 1977’s “Point of No Return.” a monumental version of “Song For America,” the mandatory but yet emotional “Dust In The Wind” which features both Morse and David Ragsdale in a violin duet and finally the band’s moniker “Carry On My Wayward Son”… Hell, it just wouldn’t be a KANSAS show without that now would it? But neither the CD nor the DVD end here! As an extra special bonus, the afternoon jam of “Down The Road” was also included featuring the entire band and their special guests for a moment caught in time that is nothing short of breath taking.

While the CD version and DVD versions of “There’s Know Place Like Home” are sold separately, they still go hand-in-hand. The CD itself is just tremendous with a production value and mix you can enjoy listening to on your computer, car, or anywhere but the real excitement comes from watching these veteran musicians perform the music that’s made them legends right before your eyes and in the comfort of your own living room. Great package all around and absolute MUST for any KANSAS or classic rock fan.
