PILOT SPEED, a Toronto based pop rock band has released their new CD “Wooden Bones”.
The opening cut “ Put The Phone Down” is a catchy cut that will have you humming the title to yourself over and over again. A likable song, that possibly can have redundant radio play.
Vocalist Todd Clark has that lackadaisical strain sound to him, as demonstrated in the song “Bluff”. To me, it is a bit tiresome but works well for the band.
Listening to the next few cuts PILOT SPEED isn’t about speed but more like a mellow drive through a morning fog, which isn’t a bad thing. PILOT SPEED has found their sound and is steadying the course. “Where Does It Begin” is another type of low lying fog that lingers on and on. This seems to be their trait. Underlying sweeping keyboard sounds engulfed with solid simplistic rhythms (provide by Ruby Bumrah, Bass and Bill Keeley on drums) set the mood through out the entire CD. The Title song ”Wooden Bones” is nothing to write home about, although Clark does manage to give his Bono phasing a good showing.
I can see PILOT SPEED breaking into radio with their selected formula for airplay. You want to think SNOW PATROL meets RADIOHEAD with a twist of U2. PILOT SPEED is not my concealed flask of whiskey, but worth a swig.
