Eonian Records has come up with some gems and it’s no different with this new release by SHAKE CITY, if you want to call it “new”. These tracks were recorded in 1990/91 but with the production of WARRANT’s Erik Turner and KISS’s Tommy Thayer it makes the sound quality near-perfection.
If you’re a fan of the L.A. strip bands back in the day you will adore this one. The tracks have that sensation of hair metal during the glory days and enough hairspray to make the downboys curdle in delight. Power tunes throughout with great sing-along tunes like “Hot Love”. You also get the blues with “Get It While It’s Hot” so it’s not all about powder puff tunes. I am sure when SHAKE CITY played this tune live the chicks were waving the dollar bills and check out that slide guitar!
“Submarine” is a good upbeat tune that pumps your blood with great harmonies and fast guitar. This is the stuff that is missing in music today… “FUN”. Not many can match the energy and excitement of the songs on SHAKE CITY and even with all the reunions, it’s still different. The hair is gone, the flash is gone too and everything is business, which is sad.
I totally enjoyed listening to SHAKE CITY; first because I never heard these songs so they are fresh for me and second I know my writer David Felix loves this stuff (NO YOU CAN”T BORROW IT - I’ll never see it again!). You get some killer ballads like “Little Lianne” and you get some rockers like “Psychedelic Ride”. The vocals by Adam Shore are simply put excellent!!! These guys are the full package that was 80’s rock… good lyrics, good choruses, and tastefully done tunes.
A tune like “Sweet Dreams” is a hit that’s a tasty melodic rocker that will tantalize your tastebuds. The next track “Game Of War” was written by Jani Lane of WARRANT and you can feel the downboys energy flowing. No wonder many don’t know Adam was an original downboy before Lane. All the tunes have great hooks, sweet guitar, and most of all vocal power. This one is an exceptional release. I usually don’t recommend re-issues or revamped old tunes, but this one is amazing. Add this one to you collection!
