Atrocious atrocities against Christ are echoing throughout the dismal valleys of Golgotha. Chains clang, flogging his splintered broken spine as a mob of salivating defilers await the Jew's impending release from this mortal coil. The nails of Satan are heard plunging deep, brutally driven into his supple wrists and feet. You gasp as ‘WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!’ roars forth from the abyss of Glen Benton's venomous maw, and so begins the hellish journey that is "Icons of Evil". A magical quality regarding Vital is how they construct their compositions. It’s a question of harmony versus chaos, like hiding rich and textured musical notes inside an underground bunker during a tornado. Some of the tracks are even (dare I say) commercial in appeal, further refuting the theory that extreme metal isn't viable or designed for mass consumerism. "Icons of Evil" is a fine case in point, with its repetitiously hummable melody line and hook laden gut puking grunts. As society becomes more extreme so in turn does what was once deemed taboo become less threatening and more commonplace. Unfortunately, Death Metal is no exception and though it may never be accepted with open arms by the mundane creed of a ‘God’ fearing planet of vermin, it may achieve its long overdue comeuppance before doomsday rears its homosapien liquidating head.

This music is ultra incendiary indeed. So much so that not many bands in Death Metal circles would (Or could) dare throw down a gauntlet in regards to a challenge. They are a lethal killing machine for various reasons, one being the lynch-pin Dave Suzuki- a multi talented instrumentalist (He tackles bass, drums and lead guitar) and a seminal one man band unto himself. The other is founding member and diabolical guiding force Tony Lazaro (guitar, lyrics) who has single handedly enforced VITAL REMAINS legacy with the fortitude of an ancient blacksmith, keeping them...well, vital for all of these necrotic years. Much of the audio purgatory is akin to modernistic renditions of classical baroque, as if conjured by Wagner in Dante's ninth circle then transcribed by twenty first century Metal mongers, and like that music of yore the song lengths are exceeding and the poetic melodies as prominent as the dramatic flourishes. As sworn evidence pay heed to "Reborn...The Upheaval of Nihility" and "Hammer down the Nails" for proof. Such a plateau of excellence can only come from seasoned veterans and VITAL REMAINS are the best of such components.

Certain cabinets within the Metal community are citing this as our generations "Reign in Blood", the very template by which all others must adhere to and attempt (repeat...attempt) to dethrone. Well, I say let the armour and skin fly, a stellar and bloody battle is sure to ensue.
