Legendary NYC street metal band Spread Eagle made their return to live shows with a trio of east coast shows recently. It has been a long time coming as their tour to promote their most recent album, 2019’s “Subway to the Stars” (Frontiers Records) was wiped out due to the pandemic.

RockEyez was able to catch the band on the last of the short 3-show run, which also included stops in Philadelphia, PA at the Masquerade Festival and Arlene’s Grocery in New York City. Seeing the band live again was great as original members Rob DeLuca (bass) and Ray West (vocals) were joined by long-time drummer Rik DeLuca and brand-new fill-in guitarist Gianmaria “Jommy” Puledda who was filling in on these dates for guitarist Ziv Shalev. I have to say that Jommy was a great find as the band auditioned guitarists virtually a couple of months prior to these shows and he had the (original guitarist” “Paul DiBartolo guitar tone” and his solo’s pretty much down pat and came all the way from Italy to boot!

The last I saw Spread Eagle was way back in 2011 at the same venue and the band seemed to be having a great time this night and sounded as though they were firing on all cylinders. Their set list featured four tracks from their latest album “Subway to the Stars” as the tracks “Speed of Sound”, “Dead Air”, the title track “Subway to the Stars” and “Solitaire” made the cut and the songs stood perfectly next to classics like “Broken City”, “Devil’s Road”, “Suzi Suicide”, “Back on the Bitch”, “Thru These Eyes” and “Scratch Like a Cat”. All in in all it was a nice set list bringing back memories of not only the first two classic Spread Eagle albums from the early 90s but also the strong comeback that “Subway to the Stars” was from 2019. Singer Ray West even asked the crowd how many there remembered the band from their Studio One (Newark, NJ) days.

It was great catching up with Rob DeLuca and Ray West as RockEyez was there at the bands very first show in Asbury Park, NJ back in 1990! Rob let us know that he was getting together with regular guitarist Ziv Shalev soon to continue writing sessions for a new album so hopefully we will get that follow up to “Subway” very soon and we will also have the chance to see that band play some more live shows.

Direct support for Spread Eagle was provided by Rahway, the self-proclaimed “Slumlords of NJ”! These modern metalers have been on the local scene for a while now and never fail to impress with their aggressive, high-energy sound and RockEyez has featured the band with interviews and photos on our site many times over the years. The band fit perfectly with Spread Eagle as both bands gave the Sunday night Dingbatz crowd an evening of good old street metal with a strong dose of attitude.
