Throughout the career of SHAKRA, which spans over ten years and countless releases these guys are still a force to be reckoned with. Reading past reviews they have never let fans down and I’m sure they aren’t now with “Powerplay”. AFM records have a prize on their hands with this new release, which has the chance to make SHARKA a mass appeal in the modern day.

The disc starts off with “Life Is Now” with rhythms by Thomas Muster that open the door to some crunching chords by Thom Blunier. The song has the perfect drive that draws you in and when you reach the chorus ecstasy explodes. What a great start that has trance-like power chords adding to seductive guitar solos. Track two “The Mask” sure has a shot at AOR heavy rotation, it’s a smooth melodic rocker that will shine on supporters of the band and will attract others too. I would say SHAKRA has that great vibe of Germany’s BONFIRE mixed with some of fellow countrymen SHYLOCK.

The guitars strum away on classic high-profile ballad “Wonderful Life”. Talk about hit makers, this is pure gold. John Prakesh vocals are outstanding in the mold of a raspier Jon Bon Jovi. This is the kinda song that melts girl’s hearts and captures the right moment for a hug.

My favorite track is up next in “Save You from Yourself” and if this song don’t drive your adrenaline up then you are dead. Just a killer track! It’s got great guitar work, top-notch lyrics and a phenomenal chorus. PUMP IT UP!

OH no, the flow don’t stop there as there is more to come on “Powerplay”. “Don't Keep Me Hanging” is a fast-paced rocker and SHAKRA have mastered the chorus once again and they should have being in the business as long as they have. I love the lead guitar work of Thom Blunier on this track.

“Dream of Mankind” is another track that will conjure up greatness. I really love the background heavy harmonies as it really brings a different element to the song and Blunier’s guitar licks go off the hook. “Because of You” will have you singing along to another classic tune with the power chords nailing it.

Ending the disc is another power ballad “Too Good to Be True” and it just sets fire to one heluva killer release by SHAKRA. If you are looking for filler tracks don’t look here because the complete disc has an array of classic power ballads to down right heavy hitters. Give these guys a listen and you’ll become a fan for sure.
