Funny to say the psychedelic era is over, but is it? A band that has risen from the ashes to resurrect the past in an unusual way, they also just teamed up with Christina Aguilera for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur_conflict ‘Darfur Crisis’. A new CD called “Instant Karma”: The Amnesty International Campaign to save Darfur” with the blessing of Yoko Ono.

But BIGELF has a new release also called “Hex.” Looking at these boys you see a side of BLACK SABBATH with a touch of DR. JOHN and who’s to say that the time is not right for the revival.

Is this just another gimmick trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the youth? Well let’s check the tunes. The opening song is pure SABBATH related with music and vocals which have an old 70’s feel but the power and adrenaline rush runs wild. “Madhatter” pushes the limits to the fullest relishing the moment with killer guitar licks by Ace Mark and the vocals by Damon Fox are outstanding.

Hold on this is not the ‘magical mystery tour’. How do you go from SABBATH to PINK FLOYD to “Sgt. Pepper’s” what the hell, this is magic and you think I’m kidding? With all the twists and turns, I think I’m in ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’.

I hope someone didn’t put one of those psychedelic drugs in my drink because I’m getting flashbacks of the greatest music legend of all time John Lennon on the track “Disappear”. Another track Lennonish is “Rock & Roll Contract” kinda in the vein of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” with a bit harsher guitar yet the music is elevating.

So far track after track has been unbelievable and continues with “Sunshine Suicide” The songwriting is remarkable and the structure is phenomenal. While listening to “Hex” I realized I was wrong. I thought I would never hear another super group, but BIGELF has all the makings of one. The caressing feeling you get from the music down to the very last background vocals show this is a class act.

One thing for sure these guys have tremendous harmonies and build upon the songs hitting the high point in the chorus, slamming down on the wa-wa pedal and echoing of metallic devices sure doesn’t hurt.

No matter what song you listen to on “Hex” it will remind you of a past or current great band or artist. The heaviest of the vibrating bass by Duffy Snowhill and the uplifting guitar and vocals shine throughout the entire release.

Even with “Burning Bridges” you get a mixture of the great Robin Zander of CHEAP TRICK mixing with a PINK FLOYD vibe. BIGELF is truly a unique phenomenon in today’s music that stands out. There has not been a band like this to come out of hiding for years.

The ending track is called “$”and it says money changes people, well I hope that’s not the case with BIGELF because I’m a true believer that BIGELF will have success and the dollars that come with it. Stay true to yourself and don’t let the evil mighty buck rule your life.
