The symphonic power metal group The Dogma got their start in Ancona, Italy back in 1999. In 2002, they released their self-financed EP "Symphonies of Love and Hate,” and would eventually become one of Italy’s biggest music commodities. That debut EP was explosive and garnered many acclaimed reviews-but can they still hold the magic they captured in the raw state of a self-made EP? The Dogma, now signed to Drakkar records, is about to release their first full-length major label CD entitled “Black Roses.”
“Black Roses” opens with shredding melodic guitar, kicks into an amazing keyboard melody, breaks barriers by slamming the double bass drums, and finally ends with a short piano ditty. The mixtures of sounds you will hear are those of Iron Maiden, Helloween, and Primal Fear - plus they have added power and gothic flare. Vocally, you get a fantastic array of skill and range with Michael Kiske (Helloween). The guitar work by Cosimo Binetti is clean and outstanding. These guys just blow me away with their musical talent and the arrangement of their music. The keyboards by Stefano Smeriglio will be a huge factor in the success of “Black Roses” when they soar with the guitar, it is unbelievable.
That is not the only kick ass part of The Dogma, bassist Steve Vawamas and drummer Marco Biachella present a rhythm section of astounding physical force. Ending the CD is “Maryann,” which I feel is the highlight song and has all the elements of a classic- especially the acoustic guitar and the great pipes of Daniele Santori. If you like gothic, power metal and the sounds of King Diamond, then this is the CD for you.
