You would figure that with a website named ROCKEYEZ that you would never see us reviewing a RAP rock band named HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD, but when Jen over at Big Machine Media sent us the package with these 6 dudes with friggin’ hockey masks painted on the CD cover, I gave it a shot. Plus it didn’t hurt having Danny Lohner of NINE INCHE NAILS and Don Gilmore of LINKIN PARK fame producing a couple of tracks and having it engineered and produced by Deuce.
The band started back in 2005, with Interscope working alongside indie MySpace Records, but that little bit couldn’t hold them down, they were looking to reach world domination. With me being a metal head but open to all kinds of music, I popped this bad boy in the CD player and BAM you have some of the most kick-ass pounding hooks, music and vocals this side of the atmosphere.
The opening track “Undead” has anthem written all over it. The hard-hitting drums mixed with the screams of 'UNDEAD', vibrates the system of nerve shock. The vocals by Deuce and other members are purely mesmerizing. These guys are from the other side of the track and take street punk to another level.
The lyrics are raw but if you get the message throughout the tracks, you will see these boys have meaning. Some people might get the wrong impression with the lyrics but we are taking six street kids that have a voice and with notoriety and fame, these guys will achieve success.
Listen to the track “Sell Your Soul” and the vocals of Tha Producer & JDog… just amazing. Another great thing about HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD is every member has his time to step front and center to shine. All the tracks have a mixture of different members with no ego’s here.
HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD possesses phenomenal harmonies that are unmatched and even with the hardcore lyrics you feel a sense of brilliance. Some of the tracks are just fun pop tunes yet some have deep meaning.
The track that will shoot HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD to superstar status is “Young”. It is aggressive yet has chart busting qualities and the addition of two young choir girls makes this song have class. Near the end of the track, you have the two girls singing “Till the angels save us all” and that sent chills down my neck.
I love the narration in the beginning of “Bottle And A Gun” that said “The Lord call’s upon six crazy MC’s” and then names them all.
If you think these guys are so hardcore but check out “California”, yeah Da boys call upon the violins and grand piano for this one. We are not talkin’ ghetto blasters here; we are talking about real upcoming stars. Once again great harmonies, smooth vocals and even thou rap is incorporated the harmonies still rule!
“City “as quoted by J Dog is his favorite song on the CD. It’s all about the destruction of the city and the world burning to the ground. It’s lyrically moving and vocally excellent; just an amazing tune.
Song after song this just gets better and better. It would be hard for me to pick the best songs because they’re all moving but the last song “Paradise Lost”, for me, is the master track. When I heard this line “God of mine, am I lost in your eyes?” yeah the chills once again ran down my neck. I wonder how many others felt the same way? If God can hear me now make HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD rise from the ashes to rule the air-waves, these guys have it all, a true sense of our surroundings and the enjoyment of reading the lyrics and thoughts that run though your mind make people understand they are not the only ones with the same feelings. This CD kicks ass!
