I know glam is making a comeback, but now LOVERBOY is on the comeback trail too. No way! Yeah way, I’ll tell you a little secret, I was a big LOVERBOY fan too… blasting “Turn Me Loose” and “Kids are Hot Tonight” on my stereo, holding up a hair brush, making believe I was Mike Reno. Don’t laugh… you know you did too. Those were the days, when you could let loose.
Well Mike and the boys are back and hitting hard with their new 2007 release “Just Getting Started.” Paul Dean is still swinging a mean rhythm section with his high quality riffs, and with the ever loving Matthew Frenette keeping time behind the kit the band is not missing a beat. I mean one of the big factors in the success of LOVERBOY was MTV (which you can now call CTV {Commercial TV}). But now, LOVERBOY has stood the test of time and this CD sears with some fantastic tracks. The opening track “Just Getting Started” is a flashback tune that is reminiscent of the “Get Lucky” days. You might figure these boys could not bring it anymore, you would be totally wrong. Just by listening to that opening track, LOVERBOY might have aged but these guys are playing as if they have been rejuvenated with water from the fountain of youth.
It amazes me that “Fade To Black” a song that would reach out to the alternative crowds and is a better song than any new band has put out to date. This just shows you how much the new bands should look back in time and gather quality from bands such as LOVERBOY.
Reno’s voice has changed a bit but the characteristic vocals are still amazing. He still possesses powerful vocals and he displays them with ease on “Just Getting Started” …he is definitely one class act. LOVERBOY was huge in the Eighties and their ability to write classic tunes has never left, you will also hear that on “Just Getting Started.” From start to finish, there is not one filler tune; every song has that identifiable AOR vibe that could make an impact for a top ten slot.
One of the highlight songs is “The One That Got Away” that has classic written all over it, it’s in the style of a ballad with a little heavier edge that you gotta hear.
What I like best about LOVERBOY is that this is straightforward Classic Rock, not going in studio with over laying guitars, over dubs and the use of electronic equipment. This is as good as it gets.
The last track “Stranded” is done with background vocals by DEF LEPPARD’s Phil Collen, the CD ends on a great note for me as LOVERBOY is back in full stride. I guess I better get my hairbrush out again; stop laughing you’ll be doing the same.
