Genuine 100%. Finally, here we have this record, recorded in 1996. Originally called "Eighth Star,” it was recorded ten years after first meeting between Iommi & Hughes in Black Sabbath in 1986.
Now Sanctuary has finally made this record available to the public. It's been overdubbed, re-mixed and portions have been re-recorded. For example - the drum parts, originally played by Dave Holland (ex- Judas Priest ), are now performed by Jimmy Copley.
If you like, Glenn Hughes you have to buy this record. The songs are sober; Iommi's guitar work is dry, dark, and reminiscent of his Black Sabbath sound - mixed with an underlying Deep Purple feel to it. Under all of the dark sound is a classic hard rock & blues foundation.
"Gone,” an alternate version of the song included in Glenn Hughes' "The Return of Crystal Karma,” sounds like heavy ‘acid' rock by way of Deep Purple ; it's got a killer riff that's possessed. The riff of "From another World" is special and in it, Glenn gives us a sample of his vocal prowess in this bluesy ballad.
"Don't You Tell Me" is a hard driving song with great guitar work, all the while Hughes shows off his style. "Don't Drag the River" is a great melodic rock song. "Fine" has that classic "Black Sabbath" guitar sound everyone's familiar with. Some may say that it sounds like Alice in Chains, but... In "Time Is the Healer,” the guitar work is 100% Black Sabbath and Hughes again punctuates this hard rock track. "I'm Not the Same Man," sounds more contemporary with a fresh hard rock beat. The record closes with "It Falls through Me" which sounds just like "No Stranger To Love" – a track off of Black Sabbath's “Seventh Star" in which both Hughes and Iommi were members.
