Yeah we are breaking ground here at RockEyez.com with one of our very few reviews on a Christian rock band called SKILLET that start back in 1996. John Cooper left his band SERAPH and formed SKILLET but to our dismay SKILLET did not start out as a Christian metal band, they went through the typical musical growth periods ranging from grunge, electro-industrial, nu metal, alternative rock, and even hints of Goth metal. Even their third release “Invincible” was reminiscent of MARILYN MANSON or NINE INCH NAILS.
Big changes were to come as the band evolved into one of the top drawing Christian rock bands known worldwide selling over 200,000 copies of their last CD “Collide” in 2003 and with their new release “Comatose” surpassing that mark with future sales climbing.
With all this commotion going on and SKILLET playing the Revelation Generation Festival I had to send one of my close staff members, my wife Stephanie and her church comrades Albree Smith, Pastor Michael Smith & Michael Bonner on the journey to check out the bands.
This show was back in September and I haven’t had a minute of sleep hearing the ole lady telling me you have to review this band they are something to hear. You know metalheads and the old time rockers don’t screw with us, if it isn’t metal or hard rock I don’t want to hear it. But in my case do I have a choice. You know what I mean GUYS.
Anyway here it goes. You know if I didn’t know before hand it was Christian Metal, I would say SKILLET kicks some major ass, I am not saying that because if I gave a bad review, in this case, I love the collaboration between the keyboards and piano as the songs have a surround sound effect. Actually, “Rebirthing” has a symphonic aura that is magnified ten times that really draws you in.
One of my favorite tracks has to be “The Last Night” reminiscent of HINDER with some tantalizing background vocals by Korey Cooper. The song uplifts your spirit and is one helluva song that needs to be cranked to high levels, again the vocals are in the mold of alternative style but the difference again is the masterful piano and keyboards that I’m a fan of, especially since I was a big fan of ANGEL.
Probably the highlight track would be the title song “Comatose” it hits harder than other tracks but has the golden touch to reach out to many genres. The vocals seem a bit stronger than others on the CD, most definitely an arena vibe going on here and the balance between the hard-edged vocals and the riveting keyboards make this a sensational tune for all.
Nearing the last track my perspective on SKILLET and “Comatose” are SKILLET is a class act regardless what genre you put them in. Being stamped a Christian rock band may shun away some fans but to others who are open minded and give a variety of music a chance will find gold at the end of the rainbow and SKILLET will hold the key to success. “Comatose” was a great CD, but at times, I felt the CD had too many songs sounding the same with the power driven chords but the songs do have that special element to make the band the cream of the crop from Christian Rock to Alternative.
