I have been listening to the new SONATA ARCTICA “Unia” for about a month now and have been waiting for the official release to sit back and be engulfed by the reaction by fans.
I have only been listening to the band for the last few CD’s and I also had a chat with Tony Kakko about the album, and he states this is the CD that people will take notice of, plus with the extensive touring the band will have a chance to finally crack the US market which they deserve.
At first listen, you get the same feeling you would get from past great Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL, a vocalist that could make any song legendary. Kakko has a voice that can make the move from Metal to Broadway; with his pronunciation of lyrics he holds your attention. Regardless of the tunes on “Unia” good or bad Kakko has the ability to caress the senses.
The strong opening track “In Black and White” starts things off in great fashion. As captivating as Kakko is oozing with charisma, guitarist Jani Liimatainen is a shining star that doesn’t get the credit he should. The changing elevation from mild to hard edge brings the song full circle.
Another killer tune follows with “Paid in Full”. Keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg does an amazing job as his mastery of the piano fills this tune with notes that will have your imagination running wild.
The songs that are highlighted are many but “Caleb” is my particular favorite. It starts off with a short narration then combustion is set forth, it streamlines to a mild level, yet still hitting with power chords. Listening to Kakko you get the vibe the promise land is coming and excitement is brought to a high level. Tony is a master with his range and knows the perfect breaks in the songs, Liimatainen also peels off an animalistic solo.
I am not sure how other reviewers see “Unia” but the music is holding and the musicianship is excellent. The changing octaves by Kakko are extreme at times and the guitar solos by Liimatainen rock, loved the keyboards by Klingenberg. If you really sit and listen to this CD, it’s amazing.
