In 1990, Thomas Thulin and Peter Lundin were in different bands hanging out in Poland; each thinking “it would be great to start a new band.” In 1995, they joined forces in their native land of Sweden to make the thought a reality with SPEARFISH. Since its inception, SPEARFISH has had three CD releases and is anticipating its latest release “Area 605”on the Lion Music label in 2005.
After listening to so many power metal CD’s, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by SPEARFISH. The CD is filled with great catchy hooks and good lyrics and I simply loved the vocals. The vocals sounded to me like a mix of Vince Neal (Motley Crue) and Getty Lee ( Rush). Musically they are reminiscent of REO SPEEDWAGON or STYX. “Fate” and “The End” are both great songs in style and energy. The cover they do of “Limelight” (wild) is worth the listen, and “Burning Candles” is just an unbelievable track. It reminds me of a song by a local NJ band called SPARROW.
Unfortunately, “Burning Candles” is the CD’s peak and the music spirals downhill through the rest of the CD. The balance of the CD is fair but not the caliber of the first 5 tracks. Although, the force of the CD is contained in the first five songs, those 5 are definitely worth getting the CD.
