With the legendary band THE CURE releasing their thirtieth studio CD, “4:13 Dream” is their anything they can’t do. One thing for sure I will give them props for always sticking to their guns. They never tried to be something they’re not with Robert Smith lead vocalist always being charismatic with his trance-like vocals and the sounds always being a staple of their times.
“4:13 Dream” took some time releasing not meeting deadlines but fans should be overjoyed as this remarkable release is finally here. Originally the CD was slated to be a double record with thirty-three tunes, but the band shelved that idea. “4:13 Dream” entered the Billboard charts at # 16 selling 24,000 copies the first week with mixed reviews and here’s our take on the “4:13 Dream”.
The opening song “Underneath the Stars” has that trademark CURE sound, with bellowing guitar by Porl Thompson echoing with reverb. Not many have mastered the sound of Thompson which brings essences of The Edge from U2. Track two “The Only One” is pure classic CURE. It’s hard hitting, powerful and definitely rocks. Smith’s vocals are strong and have the driving force that makes this one a chartbuster.
Check out “The Real Snow White”; the first 30 seconds I hated the track, but give it a chance, has that great feel of THE ROLLING STONES “Gimme Shelter”. This is one of the best tracks on “4:13 Dream”. Hooks, great chorus and Smith taking center stage bringing this one to life. A kick-ass song!!!
“The Hungry Ghost” is another strong track that has good pop. A little bit heavier then some of the other tracks but still a quality rocker. The way the keyboards and guitar hook up with their sounds; they’re simply suburb. Same with the next track “Switch” which is a fast moving song with great mesmerizing guitar.
My favorite track has to be “Sleep When I'm Dead” only because it’s a slight direction change bringing a sense of the past new wave era. This is not only a great track for radio but also will make its way to dance clubs. It has the prefect elements to make it to the top of the charts.
All in all this is an excellent release by THE CURE, I mean there are a few let downs like “Freakshow” and “The Scream” but having thirteen tracks and eleven being good makes this an excellent release and the perfect time for a new Christmas gift. Pick this one up!
