Those fine men from Ireland are back at it in 2009 with their new release “No Line On The Horizon”. U2 really went through their stages from starving musicians back in the 80’s playing the smallest clubs to reaching the great heights of today. You have to commend these guys not only for the music they make but all the contributions they make to so many causes. I don’t care who has an ego if they do, the main thing is these boys in U2 have heart and that being said let’s check out the newly released CD.
The title track “No Line On The Horizon” starts things off in high fashion. The heavenly vocals of Bono are on the mark with expertise, but what is amazing through all the years is his vocals seemed to have gain strength. The music is traditional U2 and has the flavor of the early days of the band. At first listening to the CD, I just thought it was ok but after a few spins you can tell U2 outdid themselves on this one.
“Moment Of Surrender” is such a cool tune with its ambient sound and mellow keyboards by The Edge giving the song a spiritual feel. The Edge also goes off on guitar sounding like Mark Knopfler on this track.
“Unknown Caller” kinda has the feel of “One” but adds tons of background harmonies that will have fans singing along. For some reason “I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight” reminds me of THE WALLFLOWERS and with most of the songs on “No Line On The Horizon” they are pretty mellow but on this track U2 gets a bit heavier.
On many of the new tunes you will be reminded of past U2 tracks as with “Get On Your Boots”, which is an unusual tune musically, Adam Clayton adds heavy bass reverb, vocals echoing and Larry Mullen Jr. smashing the drums, you just gotta check this one out!
“FEZ-Being Born” is one of the highlight tracks for me with a minute and a half before any vocals even come in. The song is suspenseful and musically genius and with the help of Brian Eno and Danny Lanois doing most of the production it is masterful. Even with the next track “White As Snow” almost fitting a western movie soundtrack U2 just manages to bring success to everything they do.
This is wild; U2 kicking it up a notch on “Breathe” even having the tantalizing sounds of THIN LIZZY. If I would have to pick a hit off “No Line On The Horizon” I would have to go with “Breathe” because it is just a great song.
“Cedars Of Lebanon” is a track I would have left off the CD, with ten kick ass songs why change direction with a song like that?
This is an excellent release by U2 that has many highlights. These guys put out quality product every time and that’s why they are legendary!
