Well it’s finally here, the debut release by Winterstrain. Back a few months ago Winterstrain sent us their three-song sampler, which consisted of melodic metal. The sampler was their teaser of what to look for on their debut. Well, the Norwegians metalers are back with ten power pop songs with soothing vocals from Geir Helge Friedheim, vibrant guitar by Arnulf Øvre and acclaimed keyboards from Karl Gudmund Birkely.
I was really excited to get “Return to the Mirror” because my impression of the sampler but Winterstrain’s music flat lined. Listening to each track I get the vibe the band is on a straight and narrow path with no punch to their music. There are no highs or lows and it’s sad, because these are a bunch of great musicians, they need to write better music. The lyrics are there, but the music lacks emotion and punch. I really can’t pick out any song that stuns me. It could possibly be the production of the release, but I was expecting a much better CD than what was delivered by Winterstrain. However, I do like the arrangements on guitar by Øvre; they add a glimmer of hope.
