WINTERSTRAIN is a new import from Norway who will release their debut in the coming month. The CD has 11 tracks and features special guest Tony Mills (Shy) adding background vocals. The CD we received is just a teaser three track sampler; a taste of what is coming. “Sail” is the first track opening with a halo of keyboards blowing through the wind. Piano style keyboards enter with melodic guitar and soothing vocals.

Winterstrain’s main focus seems to be on the magnificent keyboard playing by Karl Gudmund Birkely as he hooks up with Arnulf Øvre on guitar. G.H. Friedheim does a great job adding his melodic voice sounding like hints of Geoff Tate. The acoustic guitar adds a great touch nearing the ending of the song.

“A Battle” has a sound with good balance, good harmonies, in addition to giving you the feeling of a higher power calling to you. The band is a mixture of Rock Fusion and Circus Maximus.

“Another Time” is the best of the three songs. It has a great chorus that will be enjoyed by music fans. Arnulf Øvre breaks some cool riffs just going off on this track.

This is a good sample of the work by WINTERSTRAIN and we will be awaiting their full length release.
