ADRIANGALE is back with “Defiance”, the new record that is hot on the heels of last year’s “Sucker Punch!” which was probably the bands most accomplished record to date. Let’s see if they can they strike gold twice in a row.

Opening the new record is the title track “Defiance” and the band starts off on a strong note as the song has attitude (as the title suggests) but Vic Rivera and the boys always seem to come up with that glorious chorus that just gets stuck in your head immediately. This song is certainly not short in that department and the melodic guitar solo provided by Eddie Campbell is a perfect complement to it all. Jamie Rowe’s vocals have the perfect amount of attitude to drive the song’s theme home. “Yours Forever” is another winner and sounds very much like it could have come off the previous record. All the usual ADRIANGALE trademarks are on offer with an almost poppy chorus to this one.

Back To You” is 3:50 of pure melodic rock bliss and I love how the song has a heartfelt tone but is almost anthem sounding in nature. I also absolutely love the guitar solo (from Campbell) on this one as it’s not the paint by numbers variety and couldn’t be any more perfect for the song. “What About Love” sounds similar to something off the last record too. I usually like the lyrical content of the ADRIANGALE material as it explores relationships in all its glory; both good and bad. I feel “What About Love” asks the very question but in a general manner and ultimately the song seems too much about the chorus than the complete song.

The next couple tracks are strong ones with “Fall” offering up a moody, mid-tempo pace with great layered backing vocals. Campbell offers up solid solo after solid solo as “Fall” features yet another one. “Sometimes” is a melodic rock masterstroke with edgy riffing leading into a great chorus that will leave you singing it in your head for days.

Warning Signs” is a simple straight-ahead rocker with a nice chorus with a great solo. I really like the solos Eddie Campbell has come up with on “Defiance”. “Fire” is another straight-on rocker with “wall of sound” vocals similar to the previous track. This time Vic Rivera supplies the soloing and he isn’t far behind Campbell in that department. The solo is a little more practical in purpose but works well within the song.

Last Of My Heart” is Vic Rivera’s baby on this record. Much like “Sucker Punch!” ended with the Jamie Rowe penned “You”, Rivera pours his heart into this track and it comes off as sounding a little different than anything on the rest of the record. Perhaps Vic has a solo album in him at some point?
Rounding out “Defiance” is the slightly obscure Billy Idol/Steve Stevens penned track “Speed” from the motion picture of the same name (starring Keeanu Reeves). Rowe does his best Idol impersonation and the song ends up being a faithful rendition of the original.

ADRIANGALE have come up with another winner for sure and it rates just below the last record for me. It’s got plenty for the melodic rock lover to enjoy and at just under 39:00 in length it does the job without overstaying its welcome. The band has found a new lease on life with the last two albums and hopefully they will continue into the future.

Note: Look for a “Best of” two-disc release from the band close to the end of 2014. It’s set to feature some new material and rarities in addition to twelve of the bands best from all their previous records.
