One thing I admire about VAINS OF JENNA their continued strive to reach success. These boys pound the pavement with nonstop touring even with bands that will eat your heart. For instance I saw them open for fucking CRADLE OF FILTH, what a bunch of GUNS N ROSES hair metal band opening for CRADLE. Yep even with creeping death marching right behind their heads these boys said fuck you, we are here to play, you like us great, and you don’t like us great we’re still playing.
But hark only a handful of those tours happened and the VAINS boys focused on their pride playing with high profile bands CRASHDIET, POISON, and RATT among others. Well the time has come for some new tunes so VAINS hit the studio to record their latest CD "The Art Of Telling Lies". I am big on the resurgence of in your face gutter rock and it looks the new CD jumps a level in bringing the best to the masses.
Starting things off is "Everybody Loves You When You're Dead" a smooth rocker that blow the simplistic guitar chords to smithereens. Love the first soft effect and pure annihilation smashes your face. Lizzy DeVine is simply chilling; this guy brings the vocal power that excites. Little bit raw, little bit heavy but surely captures your attention. Nicki Kin’ suave guitar licks are top notch and volatile, pushing the limits to the edge.
First you think "Mind Pollution" is a little too AOR oriented but just give it a chance and listen to how classic these boys are DeVine screams can wake the dead and Kin goes off the hook. Loved the track!
Can VAINS pull this one off? How can you do justice to Tom Petty’s Refugee? I liked it. It’s like a refined smokin’ version that brings Refugee to date. The background harmonies are killer.
Blow me away!!! "I Belong To Yesterday" my first thoughts listening to this gem was have these boys changed into some candy ass pussy boys playing to get some air-play, but a few spins I feel prime time GUNS N ROSES vibes but in the VAINS style. This is a HIT!!! Let me first bow down to Lizzy you did a FUCKING amazing job on this track.
You know you don’t have to rile the masses, you can be mellow like classic BEATLES or OASIS but when you can hit hard and bring a silent scream bringing back memories of classic artists as with "Paper Heart" you will turn heads and VAINS did that with "Paper Heart". What a phenomenal tune!!!
"Enemy In Me" is their first single that will put you in the third dimension. Melodic, heavy, hard, catchy, a dream comes true. Great guitar work, masterful vocals, bass line that shatters membranes, drums of a heart beat. Pure gold…too bad it had to end.
Another mind-bending tune is "Better Off Alone" has the essences of THE BEATLES meet GUNS N ROSES. The first few releases from VAINS were good but this is just unbelievable. These guys have grown beyond belief. I am floored how amazing these guys are.
DO NOT LOOK FOR ANY FILLER’s on "The Art of Telling Lies". The last song and title track is another rocker that leaves you with wanting more. The song is fast paced and rips and shreds like a new CD should. Don’t leave me with a ballad I want rock and I got Rock…..Hey Nikki are your fingers bleeding after this song…. Jacki nice rolling drums…..
Pick this CD up right away. Go anywhere and get, steal it if you have to just get it. It’s the best release of the year!!!! These guys are on tour right now with DIRTY PENNY, go out support these guys. We will be hooking up with them on October 31st for their live show in New Jersey at Dingbatz in Clifton. So you will be seeing a live review with photos from the tour on our site after that date.
